In Conversation with Alain de Botton

Sandaire’s More to Wealth lecture series was launched in 2013 as part of a number of initiatives aiming to promote a deeper understanding of the concept of wealth in its many guises, its role in society and how it varies for different individuals and communities.

The premise is simple: leading minds from different fields, including academia, industry, the law, the performing arts and government, present their opinion on the concept of wealth. The purpose is to stimulate discussions about the meaning of wealth and further the recognition, role and purpose of wealth in society.

As this extraordinary year comes to an end, there is no doubt that we are all looking forward to some time to rest and reflect. For those in need of a little inspiration, we are delighted to bring you a series of highlights from our most recent More to Wealth lecture.

Our speaker, Alain de Botton, the Swiss-born, British-based philosopher, author and television presenter, recently enlightened our clients with his fascinating views on status anxiety and the stresses and strains of living in the modern economy.

Alain is a writer of essayistic books that can be described as a ‘philosophy of everyday life.’ He has written on love, travel, architecture and literature. His books have been bestsellers in 30 countries.

Alain’s lecture marks the beginning of our collaboration with The School of Life, an institution which he founded in 2008. The School of Life brings together some of the best thinking from over 2,000 years of human culture (philosophy, psychology, science and art) to provide individuals with good ideas and thoughtful tools for everyday life.

The School of Life addresses challenges such as how to find fulfilling work, how to master the art of relationships, how to understand one’s past, how to achieve calm and how better to understand, and where necessary change, the world. Together we will develop thought provoking content on a variety of topics relevant to families with wealth and the advisors who support them.

In the first of our video series, Alain talks to Alexandra Altinger about the meaning of wealth.
