A visit to Tokyo in early March for a bi-annual Wigmore Association meeting provided an opportunity to discuss with local experts and other investment professionals, a number of investment related topics: could an ageing economy offer interesting prospects for equity investing; how will the Bank of Japan (BoJ) manage its swollen balance sheet; and if there were investment opportunities would they be best captured by index trackers or active managers?

Asset allocation is a key step in Sandaire’s investment process and, necessarily, we spend much time considering factors that may affect investment returns of different asset classes. Presently we are in a challenging but interesting period and this market update highlights the fundamental factors we are considering.

In the same week that Uber announced its flying cars project, I learned, whilst on a trip to the United States, that more progress has been made in mastering voice recognition technology in the last thirty months, than in the last thirty years. I remember embracing voice recognition some years ago, in the hope that dictating to a computer would dispense with typing on a keyboard, only to discover time and time again, that even my typing was more accurate and more efficient.

I have just returned from Washington D.C., where I met with business leaders and economists to hear their thoughts on the new Administration's fiscal reform; discuss the likelihood that it would pass through the budget process, and consider its impact on economic outlook.
